 How to Make a Pizza: A Guide for Beginners

Pizza is one of the most popular and delicious dishes in the world. It is also easy to make at home with some basic ingredients and equipment. In this blog post, we will show you how to make a pizza from scratch, step by step.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups of warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups of bread flour
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 3 cups of pizza sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 4 cups of grated mozzarella cheese
  • Your favorite toppings (such as pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, etc.)

Equipment:

  • A large mixing bowl
  • A wooden spoon or a stand mixer
  •  A kitchen scale or measuring cups and spoons
  • A rolling pin or your hands
  • A baking sheet, a pizza pan or a pizza stone
  • A pastry brush

Steps:

  1. Make the dough. In a large mixing bowl, pour the warm water and sprinkle the yeast over it. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, until it becomes foamy. Add the flour, olive oil and salt and mix well with a wooden spoon or a stand mixer until a smooth and elastic dough forms. You may need to add more or less flour depending on the humidity and temperature of your kitchen.
  2. Let the dough rise. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Place it in a warm and draft-free place and let it rise for about an hour, until it doubles in size.
  3. Preheat the oven and prepare the toppings. Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C) and place a baking sheet, a pizza pan or a pizza stone inside to heat up. Meanwhile, chop, slice or grate your toppings as desired and set them aside.
  4. Shape the dough and add the sauce. Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll out or stretch one portion of dough into a thin circle or rectangle, about 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter or length. Carefully transfer it to the hot baking sheet, pan or stone and use a pastry brush to spread some olive oil over the surface. Spoon some pizza sauce over the dough and spread it evenly, leaving a 1/2 inch (1 cm) border around the edges.
  5. Add the cheese and toppings. Sprinkle half of the cheese over the sauce and add your favorite toppings on top. You can be creative and use whatever you like, but don't overload the pizza or it will become soggy and heavy.
  6. Bake the pizza. Slide the pizza into the oven and bake for about 15 minutes, until the crust is golden and crisp and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Repeat with the remaining dough, sauce, cheese and toppings.
  7. Enjoy your pizza. Cut the pizza into slices and serve hot or warm, with some extra sauce if you like. Enjoy your homemade pizza with your family or friends.
